Jerry Alleyne was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1920. He excelled in several sports and was awarded a tennis scholarship to Temple University.

As an African American he distinguished himself as an amateur tennis player while competing in Latin America. In 1942 he joined the New York City Police Department, and in spite of suffering a serious motorcycle accident continued his competitive tennis and became one of the first black men to gained access into the 1958 U.S. National Tennis Championships in Forest Hills. There he made it to the third round at the age of 38 losing to top ten player, Barry McKay..

Jerry went on to have a distinguished career as a tennis teacher, gathering an enormous following. Admired for his teaching skills, he was equally loved for his kindness, wisdom, and generous spirit. Jerry was a wonderful teacher, philosopher, and mentor who lived every moment of his life with love.

Fulfilling a dream, in 1979, Jerry designed and built the Hudson Valley Tennis Club on the Hastings water front where he continued to play and teach and own until his death in 1998. He will always be remembered for his generosity of spirit, teaching skill and devotion to mentoring young players.

The Jerry Alleyne Memorial Fund has been set up to create opportunities for children to grow and develop through the game of tennis. The primary focus will be to arrange for children to come into contact with caring adults who might serve as mentors as well as tennis teachers, much the way Jerry served as a mentor for so many of his students. This, we believe is as close as we can come to creating a living legacy for someone who touched so many of our hearts.
